A “Smart” prison for women

In Finland, a new prison for women opened in November 2020 that features the installation of a smart system, with the aim of promoting a new approach to imprisonment that fosters rehabilitation, education and reintegration through access to digital services. Each prisoner will have access to a personal cell terminal (laptop) that can be used for messages and video calls for contacting staff and communicating with children and families. Access to the Internet is restricted to online studying, storing e-books, contacting health services and NGOs. COPE member KRITS (Finnish Foundation for Supporting Ex-offenders) is a partner in the project, providing online video consultations staffed by a psychologist.
